Assessment materials for the WALNA program are developed to reflect
good classroom practice and provide the opportunity for students
of all levels to perform to the maximum of their abilities.
Extensive consultation with classroom teachers has been a feature
of the development of the assessment materials. The WALNA tests
have been written to cater for the diverse range of students in
Western Australian schools, and to ensure that there is no systematic
bias associated with such factors as gender, culture or geographic
location.
The test materials provide three levels of information in reading,
writing, spelling and numeracy. They provide -
-
information on whether or not the student has reached the minimum
expected standard in each of these areas.
-
information about the student's progression through the levels
of achievement typically associated with the years of primary
schooling.
-
information about the student's performance in relation to
the rest of the Year 3, Year 5 or Year 7 population tested in
Western Australia.
The Australian Council for Educational Research has developed the
numeracy, reading and spelling assessment tasks for the Department
of Education, in close conjunction with the Catholic Education Office
of Western Australia, and the Association of Independent Schools
of Western Australia. The Department of Education has developed
the writing tests.
