The School Information System (SIS) was piloted in a number of school from
1999-2000. From January 2001 to 9 July 2004 the SIS Project ensured the
successful implementation of the Department's preferred school management system
to almost all of the Department's schools.
The implementation project was found to be a reasonable investment for a
project of its size; achieved the benefits originally identified and would
continue to realise those benefits while SIS was used in schools; and that there
would be a future need to align any school management system to the Department's
longer term strategic and technological directions.
With the conclusion of the SIS Project a Student Information Management
System (STIMS) Project was established to:
- Maintain an adequate level of support for schools still
implementing SIS;
- Establish efficient and effective ongoing support and
maintenance of SIS;
- Negotiate a contract with RM Asia-Pacific Pty Ltd (RMA) to
provide ongoing support and maintenance of SIS in the short to
medium term; and
- Explore strategic options for a next generation system which
better aligns with the Department's future strategic directions
and, in particular, better aligns with its technology vision.
As a result support strategies have been established in Finance, Curriculum, School Administration, Customer Service Centre and in the core Project Team, to make sure SIS is
effectively supported and any future system is properly investigated.
Each Business Area is responsible for maintaining its own Website, hence the links identified on this Website.
One of these support strategies is an intent to use web-based access to pertinent information to any user of SIS, anywhere in Western Australia, at anytime.
As part of providing ongoing support to the Department's preferred school
management system, SIS, a contract has been negotiated with RMA to provide
support, maintenance and upgrade services for the current version of Integris
through to 2010.
The STIMS Project
Team is continuing to plan for the
selection,
acquisition,
development and implementation
of the next generation of school administration software to replace
SIS.
Schools can look forward to a range of new features in the new
school administration system. These will include:
-
a
centralised application; reducing school workload and
interruptions related to upgrades and maintenance as the software
will be operated from a single point;
-
enhanced interoperability with existing corporate applications;
-
the application being web-based thus allowing access to the
software from any internet access point.
The
web-based environment will take advantage of the Department's
investment in broadband and technology infrastructure. Secure
access will be managed through the Department's Identity Management
processes and will provide appropriate levels of access to relevant
information for parents, students, teachers, school administrators,
education and other government agencies. Tracking or profiling of
individual students who transfer from another Western Australian
school will also be simplified, so that a complete educational
history can be formulated.
