Science in WA Government Schools

The Learning and Teaching Directorate of the Education Department of Western Australia develops curriculum policy, guidelines and support for schools. Science is one of eight learning areas described the Western Australian Curriculum Framework.

The Western Australian Curriculum Framework

The Curriculum Framework was produced by the Western Australian Curriculum Council for all students in Western Australian schools.

It describes the knowledge, understandings, skills, values and attitudes that students are expected to acquire. These expectations are described as a series of outcomes in an overarching Statement and eight Learning Area Statements.

Science is one of the eight Learning Areas.
Nine Science Learning Outcomes are described, relating to:

Working Scientifically

  • Investigating
  • Communicating scientifically
  • Science in daily life
  • Acting responsibly
  • Science in society
Understanding Concepts
  • Earth and beyond
  • Energy and change
  • Life and living
  • Natural and processed materials

The Curriculum Framework is available online at The Western Australian Curriculum Council.

Outcomes & Standards Framework

The Education Department of Western Australia provides support for schools to plan, monitor and report progress in achieving the outcomes described in the Curriculum Framework.

Each of the following outcomes are described in the Outcomes & Standards Framework in a progression of eight levels:

  • Investigating
  • Earth and beyond
  • Energy and change
  • Life and living
  • Natural and processed materials

Supporting descriptions are provided for the outcomes:

  • Communicating scientifically
  • Science in daily life
  • Acting responsibly
  • Science in society

The Outcomes & Standards Framework is available online and contains information about each Learning Area, support documents, work samples and connections to the Curriculum Framework (available in PDF format).

Focusing on Outcomes: Curriculum, Assessment & Reporting

The purpose of Focusing on Outcomes is to demonstrate the role of the Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting: Policy and Guidelines document in establishing an outcomes focus to education consistent with the Curriculum Framework and informed by the Outcomes & Standards Framework.
