Approaches and Strategies

Students are able to access and participate in inclusive educational programs that maximise their engagement, recognise their differences and connect to the real world when teachers employ the most powerful teaching strategies. The Plan for Government Schools 2004-2007 outlines future directions and key objectives needed to shape inclusive, safe and stimulating learning environments so that all students will be motivated and engaged.

The instructional strategies outlined in this section are based on the learning characteristics and needs of gifted and talented students and can be incorporated into an individual, class or special school based program. Whilst teachers aim to provide a learning environment that provides all students with the opportunity to achieve high standards, opportunity is needed for gifted and talented students to access a differentiated learning and teaching program. Gifted and talented students should be provided with ongoing opportunities to develop their skills, knowledge and values in order to become confident, independent learners who achieve their individual potential and contribute to the social and economic development of Western Australia.

The State's Curriculum Framework outlines thirteen Overarching Learning Outcomes which describe the outcomes students need to attain in order to become lifelong learners, achieve their potential in their personal and working lives and play an active part in civic and economic life. These outcomes apply across all learning areas and are the responsibility of all teachers.
