Students:
- discuss the problem of numbers in the boat after reading stories which have numbers of things in them e.g. Who Sank the Boat? by Pamela Allen, 1982, Nelson.
- represent the problem using concrete materials
- print the problem out using numerals, e.g. five animals sank the boat:
1 cow + 1 sheep + 1 pig + 1 donkey + 1 mouse = 5 animals
- use concrete materials to pose a different problem. The problem can be written as a number sentence within a story for others in the class to solve.
