The District Education Office is located in Northam which is a regional centre east of the Darling scarp and located on the route from Perth to the Goldfields and the Eastern states. Northam was settled very early in the history of Western Australia as an agricultural area, it was, and is a fertile area close to Perth markets. At the turn of the century the discovery of gold and rapid development of the eastern goldfields at Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie had a dramatic impact on Northam. The town of Northam become the centre for the development of Public Works with the building of the rail line, roads and water supply routes to the new centres passing through Northam. Northam has retained its regional status in the provision of state government services.
The District Office![]() The Midlands Education District covers an area of 78,000 square kilometres and contains the major regional centres of Northam, Moora and Merredin. It extends from Wundowie in the west to Moorine Rock in the east, Buntine in the north and Mount Walker in the south. The economy is based largely on agriculture. The 50 government schools in the district enrol about 6,700 students and include 33 primary schools, 12 district high schools and three senior high schools, one campus of the WA College of Agriculture, one Education Support Centre and the CY O'Connor College of Technical and Further Education. The main objective of the district is to deliver quality services to schools so that student outcomes are enhanced.
