Supporting school improvement

There are two Directors in the Midlands District:

Margaret Collins is the District Director.

Julie Woodhouse is the Area Director.

The Directors have two responsibilities:

  • They are the line managers for the principals in the District; and

  • They undertake school reviews to assure the Director General and the wider community about the performance of Government schools in the District and to prompt ongoing improvement in performance by District schools.

School Review

The school review process involves the Directors visiting schools on a regular basis to judge whether they are being managed in an accountable way. Eight outcome areas are examined as part of the review. They are:

  1. The school acts to improve performance based on the appropriate analysis of quality data gathered about the standards of student achievement.
  2. The school delivers learning experiences that are outcomes-focused and responsive to the needs of students.
  3. The school offers a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment.
  4. School leadership is committed, responsive and collaborative.
  5. School staff are motivated, engaged and competent.
  6. The school's financial and physical resources are managed to optimise learning outcomes for students.
  7. The school operates in partnership with the community.
  8. The school responds to the strategic directions of the Plan for Government School Education.

The review cycle for each school lasts two years and at the conclusion of the cycle a formal report is written, summarising the judgments made by the Director about the school's effectiveness. This report is available to the School Council.

Each Semester, reports are provided by the Directors to the Department's Executive on the effectiveness of schools across the District.
