Tips for searching MacquarieNet

The MacquarieNet website offers detailed information about searching and using the results screens. Click "Help" at the top of any screen in MacquarieNet and follow the link to "Searching on MacquarieNet".

Quick Search

The Quick Search box appears at the top of every page of MacquarieNet. It allows the user to search using keywords using either "All Content" or "Dictionary" options.

  • If more than one search term is typed in, the results will contain all the search terms. The operator "AND" is implied and should not be used.
  • The operator "OR" may be used to find results containing either of two search terms.
  • Speech marks may be used to find results containing a search phrase, such as "marsupial mouse".
  • Wildcard characters can be used - see MacquarieNet help.

Advanced Search

This search allows the user to select particular MacquarieNet content to search.

  • Users have the option to search within a collection of titles of the same content type, such as "News Archive" or "Images".
  • Alternatively, users can select an individual title, such as Encyclopedia of Australian Art, within which to search.
  • The rules for Quick Search (above) still apply.

Results Page

  • Results are ordered by reading level: Easy, Medium then Advanced.
  • Results are organised by the title of the resource. Each title is listed only once, with the number of results pages found in that title. The results best matchinbg the search (top hit) is listed under each title. For example, a Quick Search "desert" returned Macmillan Illustrated Encyclopeadia as one title, having 9 results hits. The top hit, listed under the title, was "Desert".
  • Clicking the title will take the user to a page listing all the results hits. In the example above, the other 8 hits included entries for "Earth", "Camel" and "Continent".
  • Click to view an entry. The search terms are highlighted to make it easy for users to skim the entry.
  • Bibliography information is listed at the bottom of each page for students to copy if they plan to use the entry.
  • Users can return to the results list by clicking "Back to All Search Results".
