Other Approaches to Doorways

Useful starting points for planning units based on a Doorways theme are available from the following journals and websites. These suggestions can be used instead of or to supplement the CMIS Approaches.

The Literature Base
Vol 15, Issue 2, May 2004

Includes units of work for Early Childhood to Early Adolescence, annotated booklists and display ideas to support the 2004 Book Week Doorways theme.
Suggested approaches:
  • Local history - Society and Environment, Arts, Technology and Environment, & English - Middle Childhood to Early Adolescence [Many activities can be tied into Australian Year of the Built Environment]
  • Historical fiction and/or fantasy - Society and Environment, English - Middle Childhood to Early Adolescence
  • Historical and Fantasy Fiction involving time-slip portals
  • Picture Books for the lower school - English, Arts, Health and Physical Education - Early Childhood
  • Doorways in Dialogues and Dramas: reading, writing and oral language activities - English - Middle Childhood to Early Adolescence
A subscription to The Literature Base is worthwhile for school libraries. It is always full of relevant and practical ideas for incorporating literature into the curriculum.
