Encyclopaedias Online

These links include both free and subscription Encyclopaedias available to schools online.

Although the free sites provide a reasonable range of information, schools should consider subscribing to at least one good general encyclopaedia.



Britannica Online: School Edition

The School Edition of Britannica Online provides three different levels of information and integrates search results so that users may choose the most appropriate level for themselves. The encyclopedia can be accessed by topic through a number of categories including Magazines, Internet Guide, Video and Media.

Encarta Online

An online, abridged version of Encarta Encyclopedia. It is free, uses a keyword/phrase search facility and contains concise text with links to further information, photographs and maps. An extensive web directory contains selected Australian and international links.

A free electronic encyclopedia with articles taken from the Concise Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia (6th Ed.). Users can use a simple keyword search function or browse the encyclopedia alphabetically by volume.

Living Library  [Subscription]

Living Library contains a wide collection of information resources suitable for schools from K-12. The collection includes encyclopaedias, dictionary and thesaurus, weblinks, clip art, a picture library, multimedia and newspapers. The site is divided into two main sections, one for primary and the other for secondary. There is also a ‘Teacher Tips’ section, tailored to each level that gives ideas for using Living Library in the classroom and includes two special features, Spotlight and This Day in History.

Availability: Because of perceived problems with speed on line in some locations and a British bias, this resource has not been widely promoted in Australia and there is, therefore, no current Australian price available.

MacquarieNet is not an online encyclopaedia as such, but rather, it gathers together an array of data sources that are searchable from the one database. It provides access to a range of encyclopedias; AAP News; multi-volume Australian history works such as Manning Clark's A History of Australia; an Australian Atlas; Internet links and lesson plans; the Macquarie Dictionary and Thesaurus; and a range of specialist dictionaries. It also includes an Explore Australia interactive map that gives access to the most recent Australian census data.

This online equivalent of the Webster's CD-ROM range contains both Australian and World content. The section on Australia includes sport, nature, environment, history, film, biographies and literature among others. In addition there is a curriculum-based content section and computer skills training and teaching.
