Copyright is a complex issue and one that should never be ignored. Seek advice if you have any copyright questions.

There are a number of legal issues that must be attended to by teachers when using copyrighted materials with students.
The following links provide information for DET schools about these issues:

Copyright notices
The principal is responsible for ensuring that clearly visible and legible notices are placed in classrooms, libraries and other places in the school that are in close proximity to all:
- Computers
- Scanners
- Photocopying machines
- VCR players
- DVD players
- CD Burners and
- Other equipment used for copying either by analogue or digital means.
The notices are displayed to make the users aware of the potential for copyright infringements.
The school may be liable for infringement of copyright by providing copying and electronic equipment without supervision or without taking adequate steps to warn users of the copyright implications of their copying practices.
Copyright notices are supplied as an appendix in Copyright for Schools.
Copyright licences
It is the schools responsibility to set up and maintain a file/folder of all copyright licence agreements. These licences may be required if an audit or sampling takes place.
NEALS
The National Copyright Guidelines are licensed under the National Educational Access
Licence for Schools (NEALS). Schools administered or represented by parties to
NEALS may freely reproduce and/or make available online or electronically transmit this
publication in whole or part for educational uses. When copies are made of resources carrying the NEALS logo the NEALS logo must be displayed on the item to show that it is a legal copy.
Sampling
Each time an item is copied the creator of that item is entitled to a share of the revenue for that copying. A sample is a scheme devised to measure how much copying is done by schools throughout Australia. Approximately 60 schools are sampled across Western Australia each year. The results of the sample determine how much is paid by DET for all of the licence agreements for TAFEWA Colleges and public schools to use other people's copyrighted works. In 2006 that amount was $5.2 million.
