Listening, Responding and Speaking
Uses a range of strategies in oral communication to initiate and sustain communication (e.g. asks for repetition, simplification, clarification, additional information).
             
Manipulates language to ensure that meaning is conveyed (e.g. paraphrases, simplifies, self-corrects).              
Overcomes gaps in knowledge by finding alternative ways of expressing intended meaning.              
Incorporates the speech patterns of others (e.g. uses parts of a speaker's question in own answer; self-corrects by modelling).              
Listens for gist.              
Viewing, Reading and Responding
Uses a range of strategies to predict the meaning of unknown parts of a text (e.g. looks for contextual clues to predict meaning).
             
Reads for gist.              
Infers meaning from text.              
Uses a range of strategies to understand and build vocabulary.              
Locates the required information (e.g. in preparation for an assignment searches the Internet).              
Writing
Applies knowledge of the structure of TL to express own meaning.
             
Applies writing or spelling conventions.              
Practises linguistic components necessary for a writing task.              
Edits, drafts and redrafts texts.              
Writes using the form of a particular text type.              
Accesses appropriate support to assist with own writing (e.g. print environment, a penfriend letter as a model).
