Aboriginal Kindergartens currently operate in 29 schools across Western Australia, providing early childhood education programs for three and four year old Aboriginal children. This project aims to increase the enrolments of Aboriginal students in kindergarten. Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEOs) are employed to assist teachers and education assistants in implementing a culturally inclusive and appropriate early childhood program. The programs are inclusive of students’ Aboriginality, culture, language and learning styles and draws on the skills, knowledges, understanding and values that Aboriginal children already possess and bring to the early childhood setting.
